Many districts run evaluation, coaching, and PL as separate efforts, each with its own forms, calendar, and data. The people working to connect them, in HR, PL, and curriculum and instruction, tend to land on the same few questions. Here are four, with a place to start on each.
A shared framework is a common description of effective teaching, like the Danielson Framework, that evaluation, coaching, mentoring, and PL all draw on.
Start with the language. Put the rubric your evaluators use, the goals your coaches work toward, and the descriptions in your PL catalog side by side. If they describe good teaching in different terms, teachers hear three versions of it. A shared framework gives all three the same reference point, and a district can agree on that before changing a single tool or process.
Evaluation can feel like a compliance exercise to a teacher, especially when the criteria seem to shift with the evaluator. When evaluation and coaching draw on the same framework, a teacher gets a consistent picture of good teaching and the support to grow toward it. A useful check is to read a recent observation summary next to a recent coaching log. Do they describe the same practice in the same terms?
A new teacher may have an evaluator, a mentor, a coach, and a PL calendar within the first few weeks. If each one uses different language, the teacher has to translate. For HR leaders focused on retention, the first-year experience is a good place to look: where does a new teacher first meet the framework, and do the people supporting them use it the same way?
When evaluation completion lives in one tool, coaching logs in another, and PL records in a spreadsheet, a board report or state audit means pulling everything together by hand. Try this test: can you open one teacher’s evaluation results, coaching history, and PL record together? If not, you know where to start.
