Connecting First-Quarter Data to the District's Strategic Plan

PL Strategy
PL Data

By the end of the first quarter, most districts have more data than they realize: first coaching cycles, a round of walkthroughs, feedback from opening PL sessions. Meanwhile, the strategic plan the board approved last spring often lives as a PDF on the district website.

Q1 is the right moment to connect the two, while there's still time to adjust. Here's a simple way to do it.

Why Q1 matters

Strategic plans usually track lagging outcomes like assessment scores and retention. First-quarter data gives you leading indicators: early signs of whether the plan's strategies are taking hold in classrooms. A Q1 check-in gives your team:

  • Time to course-correct, with three quarters still ahead
  • A clean baseline for each goal
  • An early story for the board, well before the mid-year report

‍

Five steps to map Q1 data to your goals

The aim is a clear line of sight from each priority, to the practices that support it, to the data you already collect. A district team can work through it together in a planning session.

  1. Start with classroom goals. Focus on priorities tied to instruction, such as literacy or high-quality Tier 1 instruction.
  2. Name the look-fors. Ask what you'd see in a classroom if the strategy were working, like "students discuss complex text with peers."
  3. Match look-fors to data sources. Walkthroughs, coaching logs, PL feedback and observation rubrics each capture a different angle. Note any gaps.
  4. Tag your data to goals. Link walkthrough items, coaching focus areas and PL sessions to the priority they support.
  5. Set a baseline. Record where each look-for stands today, by school and districtwide.

‍

What to look for

Once data is tagged to goals, the Q1 review is about patterns. Four questions keep it focused:

  • Where is the practice showing up? Bright spots point you to peer models and future PL facilitators.
  • Where is support landing? Compare coaching and PL participation with walkthrough results to see where to add support first.
  • Which goals need more data? Flag thin areas now so principals can plan for Q2.
  • What are teachers saying? PL feedback shows whether sessions feel connected to the goals they support.

Treat Q1 results as a starting point for conversation, so principals and coaches can plan next steps together.

Share it with each audience

The same data serves different decisions. Tailor the view:

AudienceWhat they need
PrincipalsTheir school's look-for data next to district averages
CabinetGoal-by-goal progress across schools, plus gaps in support
School boardEvidence the plan is in practice, with one or two stories
Teachers and coachesHow their work connects to district goals

Keep the story consistent: here are our goals, here's what we see in classrooms, and here's how we're supporting educators next.

Bringing it together with KickUp

With KickUp, district teams keep walkthroughs, coaching, PL and evaluation in one data model. In KickUp Dashboards, leaders filter data by strategic priority, school or date range, and campus administrators see their own school's results. Teams build coaching and walkthrough forms around their own look-fors, so the data they collect matches the goals in their plan. The same views work for principal meetings, cabinet and board updates.

A focused review in October gives your team a baseline, clear next steps and a story the whole district can rally around.
